Today in 1999 the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) announced that Led Zeppelin were only the third act in music history (following the Beatles and Garth Brooks) to achieve four or more Diamond albums, a Diamond album being awarded for sales of more than 10 million units in the U.S. The diamond Zeppelin albums are Led Zeppelin II (12 million), Houses Of The Holy (11 million), untitled 4th album (23 million), and Physical Graffiti (16 million).
“Led Zeppelin is one of the most popular and influential rock bands of all time,” commented Hilary Rosen, President and CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America. “Thirty years after their debut, the band’s appeal is as strong as ever. It’s fitting that these rock icons are multiple Diamond winners.”
